Our growing Primary School serves the catchment area around the Half Acres area of Castleford within the Wakefield 'Five Towns' district. In 2016 our school was extended as we began the expansion from a one form entry to a two form intake. We are a high achieving school and pride ourselves on the good quality teaching and learning that is offered to our children.
We are federated with Ackton Pastures Primary School and we also work closely with new parents and the wider community to ensure our families receive the best support available even before the children start school at 5. We run a fun programme called 'STARS', where parents and children can take part in stimulating activities, get to know some of the staff and have a taste of nursery provision as part of the transition.
As we are a Federation we have a slightly different staffing structure at the senior leadership level. Mrs Pickles is our Principal working across both schools. She has the overall responsibility for the leadership and management of Half Acres. However, as she will not be at Half Acres every day Miss Gardiner, our Head of School, is responsible for the day to day management of Half Acres.
The curriculum is exciting and we make every effort to enable all children to achieve their full potential. A very strong emphasis is placed on teaching the basic skills of reading, writing and maths. We then aim to provide lots of different opportunities for children to apply this learning across many areas of the curriculum within some innovative topic themes. As well as the basic skills the curriculum strongly promotes many other subject ares such as PSHE, Computing, Art, PE, History, Geography and Science. We also enjoy wider creative pursuits in school by offering regular opportunities to develop cooking skills and a range of exciting workshops.
We have invested time to ensure that each school day offers children a positive experience, both in the classroom and beyond. There is a collective act of worship everyday and a range of extra curricular activities on offer. At playtime and lunchtimes children have the opportunity to engage in quality play and social activities. We offer a range of play equipment so that they can shape their own play experience and we have a group of specially trained peer supporters to help us in the peaceful problem solving process.
The school has achieved the Basic Skills Quality Mark, the BECTA ICT mark, the Silver Artsmark and the Healthy Schools mark.
In order to enhance our provision and ensure our staff remain at the forefront of innovative practice we have forged a strong partnership with ASPIRE Teaching School.
